Required Skills/Equipment/Notes to Succeed in a Distance Learning Course
Each CCC&TI Distance Learning course provides many resources to help students succeed, including connections to discussion groups, libraries, writing guides, and other course resources. To succeed in a distance learning course, students also need the following equipment and skills:
Computer (including mic and camera) and Internet Access: Students must either own or have frequent access to a computer and High-speed Internet. Students are responsible for making other arrangements if they do not have internet access at home.
Computer Knowledge: Students must also know how to use their computers to save files, access those files on their computers, copy files, use word processing, cut and paste text, copy text, and send and receive email. Students must also know how to set up their own mic and camera, if needed, and use some third-party websites, like publisher’s sites.
Up-to-date Browser: Current browser recommendations: Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge, or Google Chrome. Some software will be compatible with different browsers. If something does not seem to be working, a browser switch may be necessary. Phones are not recommended for course work.
Communication: Students must use the student email account to send messages to instructors and classmates. To access student email, log in to the MyCCCTI student portal, located on the college’s website. Email is the primary way CCC&TI and instructors will communicate with students. The reply will go to student email when a message is sent through OpenLMS (Moodle). Some instructors may use Pronto for instant messaging. Students should confirm the use of Pronto with the instructor before sending messages through the app. The instructor’s communication policy should be in the syllabus. Emergency communications may be communicated through Regroup. Sign-up is available on the college’s website.
Note about publisher’s/textbook sites
Sign up should utilize the CCC&TI student email, and if students are given a code to sign up, they should keep that code until the course is over. We recommend taking a picture of the code in case it is needed again. Students should also make note of support provided by the textbook company or third-party site.
