Adult Education Programs

The Transitional Studies programs offer support and instruction for anyone who does not have a high school credential, needs assistance in improving reading, writing, math, or English skills, or those acquiring English as a second language. Staff members are always available to talk with anyone who is interested in enrolling in any program. Potential students will need to visit or call the Transitional Studies Department to obtain an enrollment packet, schedule reading and math assessments, and meet with an advisor. Minor applicants, 16-17 years old, must complete a Minor Permission Form., which is included in the enrollment packet. Potential students may call the Transitional Studies office to request a packet.

ABE - Adult Basic Education classes are offered for people who would like help learning basic reading, writing, math, and digital skills. These classes are also available for students to prepare for their High School Equivalency classes or for high school graduates who are not prepared for college level classes and would like to update their college and career readiness skills. 

CAFE - Career Assistance For Everyone – Students wishing to enter the workforce can also enroll in the Caldwell CAFE program (Career Assistance For Everyone). This program offers students who have barriers to employment, including learning differences or challenges, the opportunity to gain the education and skills needed for successful employment. Hands-on work experiences, job related academics, as well as life and soft skills instruction are offered. Students must meet programmatic criteria.  

HSE - High School Equivalency – The HSE program is designed to give students an opportunity to earn a high school equivalency diploma and transition to employment or postsecondary education. Classes are offered on the Caldwell and Watauga campuses, and in the community. Students prepare for testing in writing, reading, social studies, science, and math. HSE graduates participate in the college graduation ceremonies each spring.

Adult Education Online - The Online Transitional Studies program is for anyone who would like to participate in Adult Secondary Education programming, but enjoys the flexibility of an online setting. Prospective students must have completed the Transitional Studies assessment and advising on campus and have met with the online instructor prior to enrolling in the online program. Eligibility requirements must be met.

Adult High School Diploma - The Adult High School (AHS) Diploma Program is for any student who have completed 17 or more credits through public, private or homeschool and can commit at least 10 hours per week to school. A total of 22 credits must be completed for graduation.  Offered in affiliation with Caldwell and Watauga County Boards of Education, the diploma earned in this program bears the official seal of the college and the county school system. Students can attend classes on campus or online or a combination of both to complete their assignments and earn their needed courses. There are no tuition fees for classes. AHS graduates participate in the college graduation ceremonies each spring.   

Digital Literacy - Transitional Studies provides two levels of computer literacy training for students. The basic computer skills course includes introductory computer skills, internet navigation, email basics, and coverage of Windoes 10 and 11. The intermediate course explores Microsft programs (Word, Excel, and PowerPont) as well as Google Docs. Students are required to take a reading and/or math assessments. Space is limited. 

ELA – English Language Acquisition (also known as English as a Second Language) classes are designed for students who need to learn to speak, read, or write English. Classes may be held on campus, in the community, and in the workplace. Students in these classes can also prepare for the United States Citizenship exam, earn an HSE diploma in Spanish or English, and participate in Integrated Education and Training programs, which will allow them to continue ELA classes while taking workplace training classes at the same time.

Family Literacy – Transitional Studies students may attend class with their children ages 1 to 5 years. These classes provide comprehensive and intensive services to families. Components of the program include Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency, English Language Acquisition, Parent Education, Parent/Child Together Time, and Early Childhood Education. Space is limited.
