Minimum Technical Competencies for Internet Classes

Basic Computer Troubleshooting Skills

Although you don't need to be an expert with technology, you do need to be familiar with your computer system and be able to solve problems when they occur. Lack of the following skills will hinder your success in this online course.

Recommended Technology Skills

  • Search the Internet and World Wide Web using a Web browser efficiently and effectively
  • Know how to start and use computer applications such as a word processor (Microsoft Office or Open Office)
  • Use of electronic mail (email): know how to compose, send, retrieve, read, respond to, forward messages, and know how to attach a file
  • Know how to connect a printer/copier/scanner to your computer
  • Understand netiquette
  • Comprehend basic management
  • Evaluate sources found on the Internet for validity and reliability
  • Access library books and periodicals over the Internet

Hardware Requirements

  •  Windows 10 or newer

  • macOS 12 (Monterey) or newer

  • ChromeOS (current supported version)

 

Computer Specifications

  • 8 GB RAM recommended (4 GB minimum)

  • 5 GB available disk space

  • Working speakers or headphones

  • Microphone and webcam (required for certain courses, proctoring, or video assignments)

 

Internet Access

  •  Broadband internet connection (cable, fiber, or high-speed DSL recommended)

  • Minimum 5 Mbps download speed recommended

 

Additional Notes

  •  Mobile devices (phones and tablets) may allow access to course content but are not sufficient for completing all coursework.

  • Some courses may require additional hardware or specialized equipment.

Software Requirements

Students are responsible for maintaining up-to-date software necessary to complete coursework:

Security Software

  • Current antivirus or endpoint software installed and actively updated (if applicable to the operating system).

Web Browser

  • Latest version of one of the following:
  • Google Chrome (recommended)
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Safari (Mac users)
  • Browsers must have JavaScript enabled and allow pop-ups for course-related sites.

Productivity Software

  • Access to a word processing program capable of creating and saving files in common formats (e.g., docx, pdf), such as:
  • Microsoft Word
  • Google Docs
  • Other compatible software
