Placement Testing - Placement Retest Policy

Placement Testing

The Reinforced Instruction for Student Excellence (RISE) is a Placement Test used to determine college readiness and skill level in English and Math. Students can take certain portions of the test, or the whole sequence, depending upon their program of study, course choices, or high school GPA.

Being Exempt from Placement Testing

1.    Determining whether you need a placement test based on High School GPA
       •    If you have graduated from a United States high school, your unweighted high school
grade point average (GPA) will be used to determine placement.

Determination of placement test exemption will occur during the enrollment process.

2.    Interpreting Previous Test Scores (SAT, ACT, and Placement).
(If you have previously taken the SAT, ACT, or a placement test, make sure to send those
       official scores to CCC&TI.)

You will NOT need an English placement test if you have one of the
        following English scores:
             •    ACT Reading 22 or higher
             •    ACT English 18 or higher
             •    SAT Evidence Based Reading 480 or higher
             •    RISE Placement English Tier 2 with 70 or higher
             •    Accuplacer Placement English and Reading 151 or higher

You will NOT need a math placement test if you have one of the
       following math scores:
             •    ACT Mathematics 22 or higher
             •    SAT Mathematics 530 or higher
             •    RISE Placement Math Tier 3 with 70 or higher
             •    Accuplacer Placement Mathematics 7 or higher

3.    Previous College Coursework
             •    If you have taken, and successfully passed (with a grade of C or higher), college level gateway
English and Math courses, you will NOT need a placement test. In some cases, previous
developmental coursework will exempt from placement testing.

For more information on this, please see someone in the Testing Center or an Admission Specialist in Student Services.

4.    GED and High School Equivalency
             •    If you made a 165 or higher on all tests for the GED, you will NOT
                  need a placement test.
             •    If you made a 15 or higher on all subject tests, with a minimum of 4
on the Essay, for the High School Equivalency Test (HISET), you
will NOT need a placement test.

Exceptions
1.    Students who earned a High School Equivalency (HSE) and do not meet the required scores listed
below will have the option to be placed in Transitions Math (MAT 003) and/or Transitions
English (ENG 002) or take the RISE Placement test.
              •    GED all scores 165 or above (from 2014 forward)
              •    HiSET is 15 for all 5 components AND at least a 4 on the essay

Students will be allowed to retest under the following guidelines:

Academic Support Center or documented completion of a college-approved
                   Placement Test Review course(s).
              •    Only one retest per subject allowed in a one-year period.

Once enrolled in a developmental course, students may not retest until the end of the course.
