Paramedic

The Paramedic course prepares the Emergency Medical Technician to provide pre-hospital assessment and care for patients of all ages with a wide variety of medical conditions and traumatic injuries. The student will be exposed to Emergency Medical Service systems, roles and responsibilities of a paramedic, patient assessment, advanced airway management, oxygen therapy, intravenous therapy, cardiology, pharmacology, and will reinforce basic EMT skills. In addition, medical emergencies, traumatic emergencies, respiratory emergencies, hazardous material incidents, ambulance operations and the overall pre-hospital care of a patient in acute distress will be introduced. Students will be introduced to many operational issues of EMS systems as well. This program has recently introduced a human resource component that will help prepare the students to seek out potential job opportunities during and upon completion of the program.

A required 500-hour clinical internship is included in the total number of hours for the class and will consist of attending various clinical sites in the area.

Prerequisites:

  • EMT-Basic certification.
  • Possession of a high school diploma or high school equivalency.
  • Successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension and English language writing skills on a post-secondary level.
  • Demonstration of mathematical skills at a minimum at the post-secondary grade level.

Co-Requisites:

  • Successful completion of the Basic Anatomy & Physiology course.
